Neo-nomad: Hawi, Hawaii

Overview The greatest concentration of biodiversity for such a compact area, anywhere in the world. In a 20 minute drive from Hawi there are trailheads to hike a coastal rainforest, a desert beach or a pastoral upland. Hawi village is hippie/artsy with tasty Kona coffee and several excellent restaurants.

Access Kona International Airport with direct flights from many mainland cities, is just an hour away on a paved highway. Load up with food, fuel, water and other goods in Kona (Costco, Walmart and Safeway).

Shelter Decent camping less than a mile from Hawi at Crawfish Farm. It also offers two platforms with roof and screens (see photo) perched in a nearby ravine offering rustic comfort surrounded by nature. Gorgeous! Public camping beside the ocean is 7 miles away in Mahukona. Permit required. Many Airbnb options and a hotel in Hawi.

Roam So many trails to choose from and all not far from Hawi. See photos to get an idea.

Optimal Season

Decent weather for outdoor living all year, but is a little wetter and windier in the winter months. Driest and warmest in later summer and early fall. At any time of year you can find trails in the sun just west of town in the dry zone. Comments A great winter getaway for neo-nomads adverse to cold weather. Diverse hiking options. Swimming at the protected old harbor called Mahukona is some of the best on the island. Check out the Wednesday evening community pot-lucks and live music jam there, and the Saturday Farmers’ Market at the Hawi crossroads.
